You are what you broadcast
What are you putting online?
I have thought about this post for a while now and trying to figure out the right way to word it. It is a very delicate topic and with the invention of social networking services, becoming more and more important.
What are you broadcasting?
I used to be one that would share on Foursquare or Facebook Places every place I was at, thinking it was cool to tell the world that I was in San Francisco, Toronto or the pub down the street. It was all about status and trying to trick the world that I was important.
Today, I rarely check-in on Facebook Places and never use Foursquare. I just don’t think it is that important to broadcast to the world that I am at the Steak House in Calgary or hanging at a pub in Seattle. Who am I kidding, I still do it just not as much. At least not daily.
I am in a business where presenting the right impression is crucial. I share with my MSP clients that watching their cash flow is important and using profits for the right things is the secret to their success. Wasteful spending on daily restaurant meals where a bag lunch may work is a great way to save money after all.
If I was to broadcast that I was a Caesar’s daily or some other restaurant would not equate to practicing what I preach.
So what you broadcasting to the world each day via your social media services? Are you broadcasting your leadership or ability or just filling the Internet with useless junk? Tough question to ask yourself and then which audience are you broadcasting at. Your personal Facebook account maybe acceptable to talk about the great weekend you had but is it relevant on your business Twitter account. It depends!
Before you hit the send or save button, do yourself this favour…does what I am sharing matter to those who follow me?
